Cold exposure
Ice baths and cold plunges have become the most visible ritual in the longevity subculture. The physiology is real — cold exposure measurably activates brown fat and stress-hormone responses — and the leap from that physiology to health benefits remains almost entirely unmade by controlled research.
Quick verdict
Winter swimmers show altered brown-fat activity and enhanced cold-induced thermogenesis; a 2025 systematic review of cold-water immersion found effects on stress and wellbeing that were small, short-lived and based on low-quality trials. No hard health outcome, and no ageing outcome, has been demonstrated.

Safety and interactions
Cold-water immersion carries genuine acute risks: cold-shock gasping, arrhythmia in those with cardiac conditions, and drowning risk in open water. People with cardiovascular disease should get medical advice before plunging — the danger is front-loaded in the first minute.
