Creatine monohydrate
Creatine monohydrate is one of the most studied sports-nutrition compounds. In older adults the research question is narrower than the marketing suggests: whether it adds to what resistance training already achieves for muscle mass and strength. Trials have consistently examined muscle and functional outcomes; none has examined how long people live.
Quick verdict
Reasonable human evidence that creatine adds a modest amount to resistance-training gains in older adults. No human evidence that it extends lifespan, and claims to that effect are not supported by the trial literature.

Creatine has been studied at 3–5 g/day for extended periods and is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, with weight gain from water retention the most commonly reported effect. People with kidney disease should seek medical advice before use, as trials have typically excluded them.

- 3–5 g per day, taken any time. Loading phases are optional and only speed up saturation; trials in older adults typically used daily dosing alongside resistance training.
- Quality and testing
- Look for a batch-tested product (Informed Sport or NSF Certified for Sport in the UK) — creatine is cheap to make, so contamination risk is more about sloppy manufacturing than adulteration.
- Buying in the UK
- Plain creatine monohydrate powder is the best-value option in the UK; branded blends mostly add price, not evidence. People with kidney disease should get medical advice first.
